A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MERIDIAN ALL-STARS FOR WINNING THE 1998 BABE RUTH 13-YEAR-OLD WORLD SERIES IN CAPE CORAL, FLORIDA.

WHEREAS, the Meridian All-Stars, lead by Head Coach Billy Burnham, won the 1998 Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series in Cape Coral Florida; and

WHEREAS, the Meridian All-Stars began their quest for the World Series going undefeated to win the state title in Vicksburg and then going undefeated to win the regional crown in Little Rock, Arkansas; and

WHEREAS, after losing the World Series opener, the Meridian All-Stars battled through the loser's bracket, winning six consecutive games and the World Series Championship; and

WHEREAS, during the World Series tournament, the Meridian All-Stars defeated Jacksonville, Florida; Peabody, Massachusetts; Cape Coral, Florida; Salem, Oregon and Shoreview, Minnesota; and

WHEREAS, the Meridian All-Stars are comprised of many talented players such as Richmond Alexander, Drew Anderson, Michael Beard, Lance Burnham, John Iverson, Tyler Maxwell, Monroe Mayfield, Ricky McMillen, Fred Patton, Trent Posey, Tyler Singleton, Andy Slayton, Quintin Warren and Print Woodard; and

WHEREAS, many individual honors have been bestowed upon various team members in recognition of their fine, dedicated play in the World Series including the naming of Tyler Singleton, Fred Patton, Monroe Mayfield and John Iverson to the All-World Series Team; the selection of Tyler Singleton, Ricky McMillen and Mike Beard to the World Series All-Defensive Team and the naming of Tyler Singleton as the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award; and

WHEREAS, the Meridian All-Stars have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Billy Burnham and Assistant Coaches Bill Maxwell and Guy Woodard, who have broadened the kids' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

WHEREAS, the Meridian All-Stars have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and a high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we commend and congratulate the Meridian All-Stars and their coaches, Head Coach Billy Burnham and Assistant Coaches Bill Maxwell and Guy Woodard for winning the 1998 Babe Ruth 13-year-old World Series in Cape Coral, Florida, and for displaying tireless devotion to their athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Meridian All-Stars, Head Coach Billy Burnham and Assistant Coaches Bill Maxwell and Guy Woodard.
